The story behind the Butterfly

A symbol of strength, courage and transformation.

The butterfly carries a very special meaning for FreeByMaria.

It was inspired by a friend, who passed away from breast cancer at the age of 44.

At her funeral, there was a butterfly on her urn. For reasons I still find difficult to explain, that butterfly spoke to me.

It stayed with me.

When FreeByMaria began to take shape, I knew the butterfly had to become part of it.

Today, it represents both my friend and my mother — two women whose stories remind me why women's health matters so deeply.

For me, the butterfly represents remembrance, courage and hope.

And above all, a reminder:

FreeByMaria was born from something deeply personal.

My mother was diagnosed with uterine cancer and went through years of treatment, pain and uncertainty. Before she passed away in April 2020, I had the chance to tell her about my idea for FreeByMaria.

She believed in it.

She knew how important it was for women to take care of their health, and she reminded me that cancer can affect women of all ages.

I also knew from my own experience how vulnerable a gynecological examination can make you feel. I had postponed and cancelled appointments myself simply because I dreaded lying in that chair, feeling exposed and uncomfortable.

I kept thinking:

There has to be a way to make this experience a little more comfortable for women.

That thought became FreeByMaria.

Today, I am building FreeByMaria in her memory — and with the hope that something born from one family's difficult experience can make a small but meaningful difference for other women.
